Government Fails

Plenty going on in politics today, but first  - the good folks over at T-Nation and Biotest sent me some of their new “Brain Candy” energy shots. Seems like its about twice the size of the typical energy shots (5 Hour Power, etc) and has about twice the vitamin B12 – 15,000%. It’ll be good stuff if I ever decide to stay up for more than 24 hours again, or if I just need an extra boost to power through my day. Thanks T-Nation!

On a less serious note (“less” is not a typo), John Boehner failed to convince enough Republicans in the House to vote for his “Plan B”. Thank God! Even after all of the arm twisting, back-room deals, and kicking conservatives off committees, Boehner still wasn’t able to get enough support for his bill from his own party. If it wasn’t clear before, this is a strong sign that the current Speaker of the House is a weak leader.

johnboehnerAs Rush Limbaugh pointed out on his show today (as he has been for the past few weeks), Republicans must stand on principle and not cave to Democrat demands of raising taxes. Sometimes that means that they will need to actually battle it out with Democrats, but these politicians were not sent to Washington to be an “Approved” stamp on anything the other party wants. If Republicans abandon their principles – one of which is to NOT RAISE TAXES – then they will lose credibility and have nothing else to run on.

Can John Boehner actually stand up to Obama? He doesn’t have a majority in the Senate, and not a huge one in the House. Whatever he passes will have to pass the Senate before it can be signed by the President. We all know this. Republicans are stuck in an interesting spot, but there is something they can do. Pass a bill that lowers the bottom 3 tax brackets and keeps the top 2 brackets the same. This shows that Republicans want to lower taxes (particularly those paid by the “middle class”). If Democrats don’t vote for it; then its on them.

John Boehner and the Republicans should take this idealogical battle to the people of America. The public is hardly involved in the discussion. What did Boehner do after he was unable to rally support for Plan B his proposal? He left. He’s on break until after Christmas. Funny. I know a lot of people who are working Saturday, Sunday, and Monday – and they actually get their job done! No vacations for these bums in Congress. You can clock out once the work is finished. If you aren’t able to finish it, then let’s get someone who can!

These are the same people who recently passed the National Defense Authorization Act that severely weakens the 6th amendment of the Constitution. All Americans are entitled to a fair trial by a jury of their peers, but the NDAA give the federal government the power to detain citizens indefinitely without a trial. Someone can literally arrest you, and keep you in a federal prison without even informing you of the charges brought against you. What happened to a criminal’s right to confront his accuser? Well, if the accuser is the federal government apparently those rights don’t exist.

In regards to gun control, Bronco Bama has given Joe Biden the task of developing new government solutions to the supposed crime problem in America. Biden was given a month to come up with some great ideas. In the meantime, the NRA already established the National School Shield Program which will enable schools across the country to participate in actively protecting their students with retired police and security personel. It took the NRA a week to figure out a real solution, put someone in charge of it, and begin implementation of it, with the goal of having schools protected by the time kids return to class from Christmas break. Leave it to a private organization (the NRA) to do something better and faster than the government (Joe Biden).

That’s not the only example of private organizations performing better than the government. Since August, the Federal government has been trying to figure out what to do with former Marine, Jon Hammar, who has been unjustly held in a Mexican prison. Only within the last week or so has the story gone public, thanks largely to Fox News raising awarenes. People around the country made the demand that Hammar be released by Christmas to his family. He was released today. A private organization (Fox News) does a better job than the government (US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton).

Its just so easy to pick apart the government. Washington in particular is filled with people who really have no idea what they are doing. And these are the people that will be in change of your healthcare!!! AHHH!!!

Limbaugh and Diet?

Well, I imagine this will be my last written blog post before Tuesday’s Recall elections here in Wisconsin. As I stated in weeks past, my personal life has been busy, leaving little time for blogging. I still read the comments, Tweet a lot, and I keep up to date on whats going on in the world. Syria is getting pretty crazy, ey?

I couldn’t help myself today. It was that timeslot – noon to 3pm. In Milwaukee that means one thing – Rush Limbaugh. If I have a radio near me, there’s a good chance I’ll be listening. I remember a few years back when Chris Matthews (Hardball – (P)MSNBC) demanded that any Republican politician come out and disagree with Limbaugh on something. No one did – thereby “proving” that Limbaugh was the de-facto leader of the Republican party. I occasionally challenge myself to try to do the same – disagree with Limbaugh on something.

Before I get ahead of myself, its important to note that I’m not the most loyal Limbaugh listener. I prefer listening to the local talk hosts over him, and even as far as nationally syndicated hosts go, he’s not my favorite. There may be more issues than this one that I disagree with him on; I just haven’t heard it.

Today Rush made some kind of comment about exercise. Oh boy. Seriously? He stated that exercise is not nearly as beneficial as “the left” claims it is. In fact, a recent study showed that exercise can actually hurt some people – 10% the study claimed. Give me a break! Wow, if I had only known that exercise isn’t good for you, I wouldn’t have been doing it so much.

Limbaugh used himself as an example of someone who is perfectly healthy – normal blood pressure, cholesterol, etc – without having to exercise. The doctors are shocked by how healthy he is! They even try to give him medication he doesn’t need, because they are sure he’ll need it soon. But Limbaugh knows better. He’s healthy without exercise, and its only those crazy leftists that will make wild claims about exercise being good for everyone.

Now, I don’t want to sound like a Limbaugh basher; we have enough of them circling him constantly in the liberal media. This is just a topic that I know more about than he does, and where I’d rather he just stay out of. Encouraging people to not exercise? Based on 1 study? Sorry, bud. I love ya, but you’re flat out wrong.

While there are certain populations (particularly overweight populations) who could actually suffer serious heart problems from exercise, for normal people exercise is beyond beneficial. I’m curious what this study classified as “exercise”. Was it P90X or walking slowly on a treadmill? If you try to get a fat person to do hard core aerobic exercise, then yeah – it’s going to strain their already weakened heart. But the fact of the matter is that their heart is weak because of lack of exercise in the first place.

Looking only at one point in time and not looking before and after – that’s what leftists do with economics. Rush – don’t do that. And please, don’t equate diet and exercise with the left. Many proud conservatives take pride in their health – its the one thing that the government hasn’t figured out how to tax and steal from us. Michelle Obama is not the poster child for diet. Diet is a great thing – Michelle is a hypocritical bafoon who knows about as much of the subject as you do. Who thought politics and exercise would ever mix?

Huh? War on Women?

I try to keep up with the world of politics. I follow the big-wigs on Twitter, I “like” the important pages on Facebook, I watch the news channels, and I listen to the radio. But I missed something. Something apparently everyone else saw – the “War on Women”. I did some research, and I couldn’t really find anything that substantiated a “war”, but I did find a lot of semi-fradulent media hoopla.

It all started when the Catholic church and its private organizations were to be forced to provide insurance that covered birth control and abortions – two things that Catholics are adamantly against – via Obamacare. (I guess the “separation of church and state” only exists when we need to take the word “God” out of the pledge of allegiance, but that’s besides the point.) Catholics of course fought the law, and feminists and the liberal media turned religious freedom into a “war on women”. Catholics are being forced to provide something they are against, and the war is on women? More like a war on religious freedom.

The matter completely spun out of control when a 30 year old college student (don’t ask how that happened) made statements claiming that she and her friends spend $3000 a year on birth control. Rush Limbaugh made a joke out of it, and essentially suggested that because the government was paying for her to have sex… well… what do you call someone that is paid to have sex? A slut? He didn’t actually call her a slut, but he sort of did – and it blew up big. There was a national campaign to ban Rush Limbaugh because he (OH NO!) spoke his mind.

Since then people have continued to hear that there is an ongoing “war on women”, where mean old Republicans are trying to “take away” women’s “rights” to have birth control. That’s what the media says, at least.  But its not the case. Women will continue to have the right to whatever birth control they want no matter who is in office. The one thing they might not have – the government forcing employers to provide something they don’t want to provide. Women can certainly spend their own money and buy birth control if they want, or they can opt out of their employer’s insurance program and buy their own insurance that includes coverage for birth control. Easy as that. No “rights” are violated.

But that’s not an interesting narrative. In order to rile people up and hopefully get them out to vote, politicians have created a phony “war on women”. Look past it for a minute, and its almost insulting. Instead of talking about issues that matter to all Americans, politicians pander to certain groups, lie and manipulate facts and twist the truth to get people’s emotions going. They’ll pander to women, to “minorities”, to whoever they think they can exploit. This is politics at its worst. There is no war on women – only disgusting politicians seeking more and more power for themselves.

You can tell that its fake by looking at the other side of the coin. While Rush Limbaugh is scolded for hinting at someone being a slut, Bill Mahr isn’t touched at all when he calls Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann cu*ts and tw*ts. Women have the right to “choose” whats best for their body, but they’re too stupid to be able to provide it for themselves and all women depend on government handouts. Women are underprivileged, but numerous studies show that there are more women accepted at colleges than men and that women make higher salaries than men at the same jobs. None of this is talked about because it doesn’t fit the agenda of those in office.

If we want equality we need to treat people the same – not pander to certain groups of people. Special benefits for some people and not for others, or special handouts to some people based solely on their sex – that’s not equality. Until we realize this and reject inequality at all levels, government hacks will continue to pedal their hate filled rhetoric that is designed to divide people, thereby winning votes and power for the goons in office.

VIDEO: Dennis Prager on Liberalism

Other than Fox News, cable TV is run by leftists, and most newspapers are as well. There are plenty of great websites out there, but honestly – the best medium for conservative thought today is talk radio. I encourage everyone to listen to as much radio as possible, whether it be your own local host, or a national icon like Rush Limbaugh. There are, however, countless hosts who sometimes go overlooked. Dennis Prager is one of my personal favorites.

Big Win For Santorum

I love to say “I told you so.” Well, maybe I didn’t tell you, but I did tell my twitter followers. A week ago I said that there was one person who could give Rick Santorum a boost. Various candidates were giving their endorsements to Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. Chris Christie, Donald Trump, and Ann Coulter all came out in support for Romney. Sarah Palin and Herman Cain both gave endorsements to Newt Gingrich. But we were still waiting for the most influential conservative voice to give his blessing.

I put out a message asking one person to endorse Rick Santorum – and later that day, guess who ended their radio show by saying there was only one candidate who hasn’t compromised their conservatism, referring to Santorum –  Rush Limbaugh. Following Rush’s pseudo-endorsement, Santorum fund raising went up 3 fold. If there is someone who can turn around the direction of an election – it’s the biggest, most powerful name in radio, and most influential voice for conservatism. Thanks, Rush!

Tonight marked a second “Santorum surge”. The first surge started after Santorum won Iowa, but was over after New Hampshire. Newt won South Carolina, and Romney won Florida and Nevada. But today Santorum won Minnesota and Missouri. (At the time of writing this he’s also doing well in Colorado, but with only 6% reporting.) Santorum is back on track, and isn’t showing signs of slowing down. He’ll be in this race for the long haul.

Santorum isn’t just another republican nominee. He sets himself apart in a few important ways. First of all, he’s the only true conservative in the race. While Romney and Gingrich both claim to be conservatives, only Santorum has the record to back it up. Government run healthcare isn’t a conservative principle, Mitt. TARP bailouts aren’t a conservative principle, Newt. On the issues themselves, Santorum wins. Hands down, he’s the most conservative candidate left in the race.

But we all know, it takes more than ideas to win an election. It takes money and organization, which is why Mitt Romney may seem like the best candidate. Frankly, the only reason Romney has done so well is because he has the money to run vicious attack ads on his opponents. Mitt has more money than the other candidates. But, (and this is important) he does NOT have more money than Barack Obama. If Romney’s only advantage is that he has money, that’s not enough to beat Obama, because he can’t beat Obama in the money game.

When the ads don’t matter (like tonight), Mitt Romney can’t win against his republican opponents. His ads won’t matter against Obama, either. Could Romney win in November? It’s a tough call. However, when money isn’t the issue, one candidate sets himself apart. Santorum is the candidate best suited to draw a stark contrast with Barack Obama in November.

Tonight we also saw that if Gingrich is out of the race (he wasn’t on the ballot in Missouri), not only does Santorum beat Romney, but he mops the floor with him! Gingrich ought to leave the race, endorse Santorum, and that would seal the deal for the nomination. Reports came out a few days ago that the Gingrich campaign is over $600,000 in debt! If this man can’t keep his campaign out of debt, how can we expect him to keep get our country out of debt?

Santorum said is best tonight. “I don’t stand here to claim that I’m the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney… I’m the conservative alternative to Barack Obama!” While Romney and Gingrich fight back and forth, the American people have gotten tired and are looking elsewhere – Rick Santorum. Game on!

Mac vs PC

Uh oh. Not another Mac vs PC opinion piece. Really, we don’t need that. There have been a million articles written on the advantages of each since the big battle began. Windows vs Mac OSX, Microsoft vs Apple, Bill Gates vs Steve Jobs. But, since I occasionally comment on computers, and have a few friends who are into computers, I’m going to write this post for them. Feel free to tune out if this doesn’t interest you.

For most of my life I was a PC guy. I had Windows Millennium (I know, scary) and then moved up to XP. Later I bought a laptop with Vista on it. Over the years all of these computers started fine, and then began to slow down. It started with little things like internet not loading as fast as usual, and then progressed to the point where I had to restart the computer almost every time I used it. With my last PC, it began crashing anytime I would attempt to close Mozilla FireFox. I ended up smashing the computer over my knee, breaking the screen from the keyboard.

It just so happened that a Mac-Head friend was in town. A few nights before I broke my computer he’d been showing me his MacBook Pro, and it was working so well. It was fast, easy to use, and it looked great. So, two days after I smashed my first laptop I went to Best Buy and bought a MacBook Pro for myself.

I must say that I was resistant to the Mac-fever. Everyone was into this new Mac thing, and I refused to be a part of it. Macs are trendy computers that pussy college kids type poetry on at the local coffee shop. I didn’t want to be perceived as that. That stigma still sits with me. I see so many people that I want to punch using Macs. But I got past it. Turns out that Rush Limbaugh is a Mac guy. So… even if every long haired, unshaven, sandal wearing, college campus hippie likes Apple, so does Rush Limbaugh. And he pretty much makes up for all of them combined.

I must say that I’ve been absolutely thrilled with my purchase. Switching to Mac is a decision that I’m very happy about. Whereas my computers used to be a stressor, now they’re a stress reliever. I can type, talk, socialize – all without a crashing computer, slow startups, or any of the problems I used to have. It’s been a year and a half, and my MacBook Pro is as fast today as it was the day I bought it.

I have to say that the Mac vs PC battle is a little ridiculous. In the end, just buy what works for you. There are upsides and downsides to both. Macs work great, but they’re expensive and some software won’t work on them. PCs are less expensive and are compatible with just about everything, but (in my experience) they just don’t run as well. For what I need a computer for – blogging, social networking, email, occasionally doing some video editing – it’s great. Other people I know have tried Mac, not liked the interface, and went back to Windows. That’s fine. Like I said, in the end, it’s user preference.

I hope that both companies continue to compete. When one company grows and starts putting out a better product at a lower price, the other company ups their game as well. One day I might switch back to Windows if I need a new computer and can’t afford a Mac. Who knows. I’m not counting anything out. (I’m actually looking at the Asus Zenbook. Hmm) Use what works, and keep an open mind about the future. This isn’t morals or religion; this is computers.

Conservative Self Education

I received a pretty cool compliment late last year. While I can’t remember exactly what it was, it was along the lines of, “I feel smarter after I hang out with you.” Nice thing to say, right? We only hung out once, and it was just 3 people sitting at a hookah bar, talking political theory, economics, and theology. I guess I surprise people – talking about stuff like that – cause I’m a gooney looking fellow with a bad haircut, tattoos, and big muscles.

Anyways, I thought it was kind of funny that I made this person feel smarter even though she’s going to medical school, and I only have a high school diploma (which is pretty useless considering I went to an American public school where the standards are more lax than Jamie Lee Curtis’ bowels after she gorges on Activia yogurt). So where did I learn to impress college kids with my intellect without having any letters after my name? It’s called self education.

I don’t know how many people realize this, but there are these places called libraries where you can go and read books, watch movies, surf the internet, and listen to music. Most of the stuff at the library you can even take home with you… for FREE! I know, right? Pretty sweet deal. And there’s one in almost every town. So, with all the resources given to you for free at the library here are a few things to expose yourself to if you want to brush up on your Timism.

1. Read books by people from different eras – for politics this means the modern works of Thomas Sowell, David Limbaugh, and Milton Friedman, the not-so-long ago works of Friedrich Hayek, and the old stuff from guys like Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, and John Locke.

Rush Limbaugh2. Get a magazine or newspaper subscription for your bathroom. Sometimes it’s the only place quiet enough to read, so you might as well stock it with some good stuff – perhaps American Rifleman (for all you 2nd amendment guys) or the Wallstreet Journal.

3. Use the internet for more than Facebook and porn. There are loads of information out there. Visit sites like Townhall.com or CNSNews.com. If you want to be even more proactive you could set Fox News as your home page. Imagine that – wake up and check your email and inadvertently have to look at Bill O’Reilly’s ugly mug or Ron Paul’s fake eyebrows.

4. Listen to talk radio. I’m blessed with a stellar lineup for talk radio. I don’t have to switch stations to hear the best – Jay Weber, Vicki McKenna, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Belling, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin. The only one I wish I could hear that I can’t would be Dennis Prager. Your brain and patriotism will grow in leaps and bounds by listening to El Rushbo alone.

There – that’s a good start. Hop to it and get your learning on without spending a dime.
